Indiana County’s legislators each offered comment on the implosion of the Homer City Generating Station smokestacks and cooling towers on Saturday.
Senator Joe Pittman said that the power plant and the smokestacks stood for a robust economic foundation for the town, Center Township and the surrounding communities, and that it provided jobs in many industries over the years. He also added that for many, those towers were the sign that people were approaching their destination.
While the environmental and economic difficulties made it difficult to operate and forced its closure, both Pittman and State Representative Jim Struzzi said they looked forward to the economic opportunities that Homer City Redevelopment can bring. Struzzi said that while it was sad to see the plant go, he is “hopeful and excited for better days ahead that bring good paying jobs and tremendous economic benefits to our county and our region.”
