At the Indiana County Courthouse lawn, 49 American flags have been planted in the ground, which represent the number of people who died in motor vehicle crashes in the PennDOT District 10, which is made up of Indiana, Butler, Jefferson, Clarion and Armstrong Counties. Amy Shellhammer, the Community Traffic Safety Project Coordinator from the Institute for Rural Health said that a majority of traffic-related fatalities happen between Memorial Day and Labor Day.
This effort is part of an initiative from the Community Traffic Safety Project that was approved on Wednesday by the Indiana County Commissioners.
