Work has started to convert the former Giant Eagle Express into a Dollar General store, but the store will be different than the typical Dollar General store.
Signs are now in the windows that show the location on South 7th Street is set to be turned into a Dollar General-branded location, but unlike many of the other stores in the area, this will be a DG Market. Company officials in a statement said that this location will be different as it will provide grocery items, like fresh meats and produce, dairy products and perishable food items. The setup will offer customers the top 20 items that are typically sold in traditional grocery stores, and covers about 80 percent of produce categories.
Prior to DG Market’s move-in, the building used to house Giant Eagle Express, a small grocery and convenience store with gas pumps located on the property. That store closed in March of 2015, and the building has remained without a tenant since then. Prior to that, the property hosted a full Giant Eagle grocery store for many years.
The store is set to open later this fall, but an exact date is not known yet.
